The past few months saw three new publications by EGYLandscape team members.

Adam Sabra (Univ. California, Santa Barbara) coedited with Mustafa Mughazy a critical edition of twelve manuscripts of poetry by Muḥammad ibn Abī al-Hasan al-Bakrī (930-994/1524-1586), a leading jurist, Sufi, and literary figure in sixteenth-century Cairo. Published by IFAO, the edition entitled The Interpreter of Secrets The Dīwān of Šayḫ Muḥammad b. Abī al-Ḥasan al-Bakrī is out now.

Dan Varisco (American Institute for Yemeni Studies) has recently published a new article in Der Islam, entitled: “Reading Rasūlid Maps: An Early 14th-Century Geographical Resource.” The article explores using a set of maps, located in an early 14th-century tax register for the Rasūlid sultan al-Malik al-Mu’ayyad Dāwūd, as a source for the study of the historical geography of Yemen.

Daisuke Igarashi (Waseda University, Tokyo) contributed a chapter entitled “Charity and Endowments of the Civilian Elite: The Case of Zayn al-Dīn ʻAbd al-Bāsiṭ, the nāẓir al-jaysh (d. 854/1451)” in a new publication edited by Stephan Conermann and Toru Miura. The chapter explores the understudied endowments of civilian officials during the Mamluk period and focuses on the endowment of Zayn al-Dīn ʻAbd al-Bāsiṭ.
